Review of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) by Gavin P — 28 Mar 2013
Some striking and imaginative visuals, a few great performances, but it doesn't add up to much. The character of Tony is especially confusing. We follow him through extensive action, and he's portrayed as a loveable rogue running from his dark past.
It feels as though we're meant to root for the guy. Turns out, that's not the case, but it's all treated in such a matter-of-fact way (the resolution of his story could hardly be considered a "twist"), that I ended up feeling sorta cheated.
It's a movie worth seeing-- if at least to catch the twilight performance of the the late, great Heath Ledger-- but the effect of the spectacle quickly fades.
