Review of The Illusionist (2010) by Patrick C — 23 Feb 2011
'The Illusionist' is a gorgeously drawn animated film that soars on it's bittersweet heart and deliciously satiric humor. The hand drawn images add to the beautiful period detail of the film, following a magician in the '50s.
Though bothersome at first, the film's lack of dialogue (characters speak mumbled French and English) eventually becomes endearing as all of the emotions and actions of the characters are perfectly understandable through the story arcs.
The quiet, dry comedy entertains throughout, with jokes about all likes of performers, from acrobats to Beatles-esque pop bands. For those who yearn for classic-feeling animation and accepting of dialogue free story-telling, this film is a rare and special selection.
