Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Alex T — 10 Jul 2011
The Illusionist was a bit of a mix for me. On one hand its very beautiful and has a lot of great animation. Colors looks really good and really convey a great sense of whatever the film is trying to express whether its the dark tones for sadness or lighter colors to show happiness or laughter.
The movie has pretty much no dialogue, so everything is shown in movements by the characters and small little tidbits of info said in French or English. This often left me a bit confused about the plot sometimes. It almost seemed that the fim maker wanted to make the viewer exactly decide about what was going on in the film and interpret it themselves.
From what I got the movie was about a magician that does performances to small audiences and is pretty much being shuffled out by more popular performances such as Rock N Roll. He runs into a girl who he starts to care for. All in all long story short the movies theme is about moving on and realizing what is real.
The story although simple is well done. Based on a script by Tati. The movie has a very Tati feel to it throughout. It even has a little Tati cameo other than the main character. Overall, I would say give it a rent it definitely isnt going to be for everyone.
