Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Douglas D — 19 Feb 2011
Generally silent animated French films wonâ(TM)t make it in the box officeâ"thereâ(TM)s just not much of an audience for this sort of thing. I would contend that it ought not to make it in the box office for these reasons and because its just not that great. I know Disney/Pixar has a virtual monopoly on the animated Oscar, but â~The Illusionistâ(TM) is the type of film that stole/steals a nomination from a film like â~Tangled.â(TM) Independent and kind of charming donâ(TM)t necessarily deserve the hardware.
Not to be misleading, this film is not quite silent. Some beautiful music adds to the overall experience, but occasional mumbled dialogue just doesnâ(TM)t work here or anywhere else. The animation is not bad, but itâ(TM)s not anything special either.
Not to be a negative Nancy, I should point out that â~The Illusionistâ(TM) does feature some sneakily emotional moments, and itâ(TM)s overall goals are achieved. Still, I didnâ(TM)t think that the journey was worth it, and I just canâ(TM)t recommend â~The Illusionist.â(TM).
