Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Michael P — 20 Feb 2011
An amazing film. Its the melancholy final act of Jacques Tatiâ(TM)s career. As the story goes, his daughter Sophie Tatischeff still had the script and handed it to Sylvain Chomet. You see how Tati felt how time was passing him by.
You were seeing the end of vaudeville. He wrote it as a personal letter to his own daughter. Obviously the animation is beautifully done by Sylvain Chomet much like The Triplets of Belleville. Its beautiful artwork it just amazing to watch.
The story is wonderfully told, largely with no dialogue. It shows the beautiful of animation and film that a story can be wonderfully told without dialogue. The score is fantastic as well. The attention to detail is amazing.
How much the film conveys is just astounding. Its funny, sweet, heartfelt, sad, joyful and beautiful. They really don't make animation films like this anymore. Definitely worth checking out.
