Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Paul W — 06 Aug 2011
A very peculiar movie, and one that will definitely take another viewing to really take in, but a wonderful homage to films of the past, when the only thing necessary to enjoy the movie was visual cues. Very few lines of dialogue in its 1 hour 22 minute runtime, it relies solely on the visuals to get its messages and situations across.
Gorgeously animated with watercolors and hand-drawn figures.
A very hard movie to rate, but this was a really peculiar but interesting one. It's a bit of a downer at times, but maybe that's just my own interpretation of the messages. That's another thing this film excels at: epitomizing the importance of "audience interpretation". Probably the movie with the least amount of "spoon-feeding" that I've come across. When you're watching, pay attention to the visual stuff, not so much the dialogue or the audio in general. With this outstanding and beautiful art style throughout, though, that should not be a problem.
Recommended for the patient moviegoers that want to sit back and analyze a moving painting.
