Review of The Illusionist (2009) by John A — 07 Oct 2011
A stunning piece of animated reality. To start, the animation is splendid. It's magnificent. It's gorgeous. There are more adjectives, but you get the idea. The animation is just sublime in so many ways.
The story itself is a down to earth, heartfelt one, that emphasizes the drudgery of everyday life when one is a fading star in the world of Vaudeville style entertainment, but is still peppered with truly fun and wonderful moments that give you some much needed cheering up as you watch these scenes unfold.
I think part of it's charm is that there really is no contrivance. The events in this movie unfold methodically and realistically. The sad, quiet scenes aren't filled with treacle, and the more happier, boisterous scenes aren't loaded down with forced comedy. It all has a natural flow, and like the amazing scenery in the film, has an ethereal beauty all it's own.
There is little dialogue, but where it's used it's used effectively. I really don't want to give anything away, but if you like to laugh, cry, hope, and dream, I think you'll love this movie. I highly recommend it.
