Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Chris B — 05 Mar 2012
This film is a wonderful animated story that uses hand-drawn cell-animation to create it's depiction of several countries during the late 1950s when the fast changing world was having a negative impact on all the stage entertainers that used to know great success.
The film is touching and emotionally resonating and also exceedingly simple and basic yet evokes so many feelings you become fully entranced by it. This is aimed at adults but children may find it engrossing as well and at least engaging to watch but the issues and situations are more appreciated by those who can fully comprehend it's message.
While the film has very little dialogue, enough is expressed through gestures and more importantly acts on the part of the characters that neither they or us as viewers need more dialogue. This is a very personal film and one that I think is good to view by oneself as it is something that should be solely focused on and thought about by everyone in their own way.
What a great departure from the loads of pointless and impressive only in visual type of films we have become so accustomed to these days!
