Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Tina T — 20 Sep 2012
Beautiful animation, warm colors, and warm story. This illusionist himself is a very kind and charming character, who adopts a parental role after young girl alice believes he is a real magician. when they arrive in edinburgh she gets attracted to new dresses, shoes, that she sees is in style.
she aks him to magically create them through thin air and give them to her. he cannot break the news that he is an illusionist, not a miracle worker, and in order not to crush the dreams of a young girl he takes night shift in different jobs.
in the end as alice gets involved romantically with young man, he decides she is old enough, and has a person who will care for her from now on. illusionist (tatischeff, aka.jacque tati) leaves the city, leaving her money and a note saying:magicians do not exist.
this movie depicts warm relationships between daughter and father, his efforts to keep her happy, dreaming, and not to ruin her childhood. but also his struggles with the world, and profession, and how his acts become old- while young singers steal the stage with the help of teenage girls going crazy for them.
it is a wonderful animation, based on the life and heartaches of jaqcue tatischeff.
