Review of The Illusionist (2009) by Late R — 17 Mar 2018
This absolutely gorgeously animated film proves that hand-drawn animation still has a special kind of magic to it that 3D just can't quite imitate. But it's not only the animation that is special, the bittersweet story is also wonderfully written and has a lot to say, doing so in a subtle, but moving manner.
It's certainly not a noisy film that seeks to entertain you with anything flashy; no, instead it plods along at a deliberately slow pace, hoping its audience will latch onto the amount of feeling that's gone into the creating the story and characters.
It's a real treat to watch, even though it may leave you feeling a little blue once the credits roll.
