Review of The Ides of March (2011) by Jason V — 27 Jun 2012
The Idea of March should be more compelling, more intriguing than it turns out to be. The problem isn't the actors-they are a superior bunch, all the way from Ryan Gosling and George Clooney down to "bit players" Marisa Tomei and Gregory Itzin.
No, the film is far too short and takes too long to get to its main point: even the most righteous of men will do anything to gain power. There's never any real drama behind the quasi-conspiracy theories or unraveling mysteries; to its credit, though, The Ides of March doesn't devolve into Gosling running from the "bad guys" or a other tired action tropes.
We're left with a simple shrug of the shoulders, as if the story doesn't surprise us in any of its supposedly fictional machinations. That may be the saddest part of all. This is how we expect politics to be.
