Review of The Iceman (2012) by Steven B — 16 May 2013
This is a wonderful adaptation of one book and one HBO special about Richard Kuklinski, one of the most prolific hit men in US history. Played to perfection by the marvelous character actor Michael Shannon along with Winona Ryder, back to perfect form, as his unsuspecting wife.
Other key roles are done in expert fashion by Ray Liotta, Chris Evans, and David Schwimmer (unrecognizable as a scum bag mob associate). The story is more or less true and follows Kuklinski's life as an adult.
His childhood of abuse and violence is alluded to, but is not a focus of the film. This is pretty bloody and violent so if you don't like that you should avoid it. However it is worth the time and effort to see it if you like really good crime films.
I hope this gets a lot of attention during awards as it really deserves it.
