Review of The Iceman (2012) by David W — 14 Oct 2013
With acting this good, you'd hope for some better writing.
Michael Shannon is on point as Richard Kuklinski. For an actor who sometimes goes a little too crazy in roles (see Premium Rush), he balances this role perfectly. From family man to reluctant mass murderer, he doesn't skip a beat.
Add to that some of the best supporting acting of the year surprisingly from some actors you wouldn't expect. Ryder is perfect as Deborah. Ray Liotta is shockingly good as Roy Demeo, I haven't seen a performance this good from him in years.
Two things really made my jaw drop in this movie. One is Chris Evan's performance as Mr. Freezy. Absolutely unbelievable, he actually plays creepy really well. On the other hand, I was surprised that James Franco got third billed for a five minute mailed-in performance that involved about three minutes of him pleading for his life.
Beyond all that, the writing is haphazard. It's all pretty straight forward, but it skips big chunks of info and time without much explanation. It also leaves some stones unturned. I left wondering what happened to some people, including the family amongst other things.
This is worth a cheap rental, that's about it.
