Review of The Ice Storm (1997) by Chris C — 09 Mar 2008
Way back when Elijah and Christina were just starlets ..
This is a very successful transfer of the mood of East Asian Art Cinema to a Western setting and story.
Ang Lee does a wonderful job of creating enough space around this complex story to enable us to look with a lot less prejudice that would otherwise be possible.
There are some sublimely beautiful meditative moments similar to Hana Bi which is my all time favourite.
But in this film the peace is offset against the turmoil in the characters where in HB it is poised against sudden violence.
