Review of The Ice Storm (1997) by André Ø — 13 Nov 2008
Ang Lee calls this his "Fuck you" film, and with reason. After a reasonably happy "Sense and Sensibility", "The Ice Storm" can come off as cold and depressing, which it can be.
But everything about it is just terrific: Kevin Kline has never been better, and the young actors (especially the about to be huge Tobey Maguire and Elijah Wood) are believable and likeable. The cinematography, like in all of Lee's films, is wonderful.
And Lee handles the story masterfully. It can be a pretty rough ride (especially the downer of an ending), but it's worth it.
