Review of The Hustler (1961) by Mitchell W — 24 Oct 2007
Paul Newman's best performance, and one of my favorites in general. When it comes to pool, "Fast" Eddie's an enormous talent , but for all his swagger, he's desperate to prove it, mainly to himself.
He tries but he can't because of a lack of 'character,' what Bert Gordon credits for his self-destructiveness. In the film's final game, when Felson finally accomplishes what he originally set out to do, it's redemptive - not because of the game's outcome but for what he's gained to get to that point.
However, whatever Felson's gained is overwhelmed by the loss and tragedy that made it possible. A brilliant picture from the top down, everything from the production down to the writing, directing and cast.
