Review of The Hustler (1961) by Georgia H — 30 Jan 2008
When I watched this movie, I was more tired than I could even have believed possible, and I kept trying to fall asleep during this movie (after all, pool isn't the world's most fascinating blood sport) but, in fact, did not.
I think the most interesting part of this movie centers on a twopart question: why did Piper Laurie kill herself, and why did she HF George C. Scott (other than "hate")? I myself can't decide.
It's an unusual movie in the sense that it twists up "victory is not everything" and asks "what is victory" without providing the usual heartwarming answer--in fact, the only answers are negative, and it's far from clear that if Paul Newman stayed with Piper Laurie and ignored the blandishments of George C. Scott, then he would have been "better" "happier" or had more "character.".
