Review of The Hustler (1961) by Luis O — 13 Feb 2009
Paul Newman stars as Fast Eddie Felson, a character who is filled to the brim with charm and talent but lacks character and that is why he is doomed from the beginning. Felson is a loser...and you can't help but feel empathy for him.
The story takes a backseat to the characters in this film. There are four, count them, four great performance in this film. Paul Newman at his usual best, Gleason who only appears briefly leaves an indelible mark, Laurie is heartbreaking as Felson's love interest and Scott is menacing and one of the most devious villians you'll see.
In the end you can see that even if felson wins that game he still loses.
