Review of The Hustler (1961) by Kristy M — 27 Jul 2009
After hearing so much hype about what a great movie this was, for years, I was disappointed when I finally saw it. I actually fell asleep watching it because I got so bored. I did watch the ending, later, but it didn't make much difference.
It was nice seeing Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats, but they didn't explore his character enough. And there weren't enough views of the pool shots. While Newman gives a pretty good performance, it wasn't stellar.
The plot is believable, but thin. Overall, I'm unimpressed. They could've done a much better job with this movie.
