Review of The Hustler (1961) by Ricardo Junior S — 07 Mar 2011
One of the best morality tales ever made, "The Hustler" is a masterpiece, nothing less than fantastic in every aspect. Brilliant writing and directing by Robert Rossen uses the pool games/saloons to evoke the carater and personalities of his characters.
Amazing coreographed pool games are a delight to see - and Gleason earned an Academy Award nomination basicly for his unique body language when playing. Eugen Shuftan's masterful cinematography and Gene Callahan's crude set design won Academy Awards.
Outstanding performances by Newman, Laurie and George C. Scott (as a terrifying corruptor) also earned Oscar nominations.
