Review of The Hustler (1961) by Dustin W — 28 Mar 2011
The Hustler is a great movie about hustling pool, gambling and ego. Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason and George C. Scott are fantastic. The trick shots used for the pool games are impressive and the smokey grey of the pool halls create a great atmosphere.
The story is a somewhat tame (consider the year) but effective tale of a man who loses everything due to his overbearing ego.
In most ways this movie has aged really well, it doesn't feel dated or cheesy, it's about pool but could really be about any number of gambling related games that people with enough skill can hustler themselves some money from (the much more recent poker favorite Rounders immediately comes to mind).
It's a familiar story but told and filmed so well that it feels fresh despite being decades old. This is a movie that has stood the test of time and passed. Wow, that last line was cheesy.
