Review of The Hustler (1961) by Kevin D — 29 Sep 2010
You cannot see the 1986 film "The Color Of Money" without seeing its 1961 predecessor which garnered Paul Newman an Oscar nomination for Best Actor as "Fast" Eddie Felson, an ingenue of sorts in the field of pool who hustles for a living, until he comes to Minneapolis and plays Minnesota Fats, played by Jackie Gleason and literally breaks down to the point of no recovery.
Piper Laurie plays his love interest with her own troubles and George C. Scott brings him back into the game at a heavy personal cost. Anyone who doesn't know how to play pool this is a wonderful instructional movie too, but its rich drama captures your heart and its intelligent script satisfies the movie thespian.
