Review of The Hustler (1961) by Jim W — 22 Oct 2008
Before now, I have only seen the Color of Money. I can see why the Hustler is considered a classic. It's well made with a great cast all in top form. The male leads are great but in a way Piper Laurie steals the show as Newman's g/f.
I still think that all the whining and complaining by such critics like Siskel and Ebert towards the Color of Money were unfair. In ways it's a lot like the Hustler but it's less moody and more fun. Siskel & Ebert said that the women were more interesting in the sequel, I agree but the same thing goes for this movie as well. Laurie plays the most complexed character in the film. However, I think the both of them are solid films. The supporting cast here is easily more impressive though.
