Review of The Hurricane (1999) by Andy K — 16 Feb 2009
Denzel Washington received his Oscar for Best Actor two years late - his performance in Training Day, whilst being brilliant, did not have a watchable film to match. The Hurricane on the other hand has both a fantastic script and all-round watchability, but in particular Washington is mesmeric as Rubin Carter.
The storyline takes a while to get going, setting the scene with flashbacks to establish how and why Carter ended up in prison. Once Lesra Martin (Vicellous Reon Shannon) writes to Carter after reading his autobiography 'The Sixteenth Round', the two plotlines finally meet and the film kicks into gear.
The only blip is John Hannah's accent, which lurches from East Kilbride to the backwoods of southern Saskatchewan, but he is thankfully kept largely in the background. A must-see for any Denzel fan.
