The key to this movie was denzel - officially denied a BEST ACTOR oscar. he lost to kevin spacey in american beauty - a role I never was amazed with - but of course the academy "made up for it" for his lesser role in training day.
about the movie: honestly - it could have been MUCH shorter, the b&w boxing was a little cliche after raging bull, it was CLEARLY biased - I mean, its based on his book - sure he could be innocent - but the movie leaves no option for the audience to argue differently.
we are fed only RUBIN CARTER'S point of view. a sloppy beginning - and the 2nd story with the "school family" helping him was initially irrelevant and cliche as well... awesome role by denzel in a less-than-awesome movie.
