Review of The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016) by Ian G — 12 Jun 2016
One of those unnecessary sequels coming out of Hollywood that doesn't really know what it wants to be, since the attention splits between 3 separate threads that it could have focused on but doesn't make cohesive, and ripping off of yet again the popularity of two new Disney Princess types from Frozen and Brave and casting Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt to join Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth, hoping gorgeous star power to drape their costumes vying for awards attention will bring the audiences.
The fact that they start with a very clunky narration from Liam Neeson to very ackwardly tie in Therons arc to Emily Blunts as the new Ice Queen and trainer for the Huntsmen, and that they don't fully focus on the reasoning for the battle for the mirror just makes the story a muddled mess.
Fortunately there are a few decent chemistry scenes between Chastain and Hemsworth and a couple of alright money shots, but defintely doesn't warrant any kind of a hige box office. I am still intrigued how much of Frank Darabonts pass on the script made it to the screen.
