Review of The Hunting Party (2007) by Isaac J — 23 Jun 2008
An interesting Western where you end up rooting for the "Bad Guy". Gene Hackman plays a cold-blooded, coward of a Posse leader who likes nothing more than to shoot the bad guys from hiding with long range rifles, Oliver Reed on the other hand is excellent as the leader of a gang who kidnaps a woman to teach him to read.
He is shown quite clearly to be the nobler of the two and more often than not walks deliberately in range of the Posse's guns to help his men get to safety. His portrayal of a man who has gotten himself into a hell of his own creation as gang leader shows just how good Mr.
Reed was, and you end up hoping that the teacher shows him the way out. The Peaches scene and the scene where Reed throws away his guns as a sign he's had enough of all the violence and killing are classics in their own right!
