Review of The Hunt for Red October (1990) by Der O — 04 Dec 2014
In many regards the perfect Cold War film, "The Hunt For The Red October" is a chilling and thrilling view of submarine warfare as tensions rise between the United States of America and the Soviet Union.
Based on one of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan stories, the film follows CIA analyst Ryan as he tries to determine the motives of renegade Soviet captain Marko Ramius. Whilst the American government believes that his actions are confrontational in nature, Ryan thinks the captain has the intention of surrendering and defecting to the Western power.
The film is quite a heady experience, and the film is lifted greatly by a more than accomplished cast, including Alec Baldwin, Sean Connery, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, James Earl Jones, Tim Curry and Skellen Skarsgard. All of the actors are some of the best dramatic thespians of their age, and this is ultimately beneficial to the film.
Along with this, the writing is superb, allowing for strong characterizations of all the major players and resulting in the audience being sucked into a complex game of cat and mouse between the two superpowers.
A truly must-see film.
