Review of The Hunt for Red October (1990) by Brady S — 29 Dec 2008
Differs significantly to the novel and loses a little in translation, however the big screen adaptation of The Hunt for Red October is a success. The film is well acted and directed bringing significant tension to proceedings.
The effects for the day are impressive and the co-operation of the US Navy leads to some very exciting stunts and shots, especially compared to this era of wall-to-wall CGI in everything. However the film has dated in places and some of the parts are underwritten such as Skarsgard's Soviet submarine Captain and even Jack Ryan himself.
Alec Baldwin is not the world's greatest actor, and personally I don't care for him, whilst the various Russian accents, Connery's in particular, verge on the laughable. But this remains solid action entertainment, as long as you don't want to be mentally challenged by a film.
