Review of The Hunt (2013) by Damjan R — 22 Jan 2014
What Mads Mikkelsen's presence and acting skill does here is it masks the storytelling deficiencies employed to achieve the central conflict. Characters behave arbitrarily and their characterization and motivations change to fit the needs of the wanted story direction.
The direction is also an area of concern as it does little help with some of the questions asked. What got me the most is the artificially delayed conflict between Lucas and the other townspeople and his friends, that should have come much sooner and the ending achieves openness through a thoroughly predictable action set up through a manipulating scene where Lucas' son receives his hunting licence.
Imparting complex characterization to characters and the being unable to sustain it throughout the film is the main problem here, so The Hunt is a thought provoking watch beneath a poorly executed story.
