Conceptually, this is a story of a Roman-esq gladiator show: you kill or get killed, or stay in hiding until everyone else dies. In between, you charm or stir up the audience to your benefit, In the end, you may be able to trick the organiser and achieve heroic status.
Maybe I should've read the book.
