The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins and directed by Gary Ross takes place in an unspecified future time in the nation Panem. This country is surrounded by twelve (formerly thirteen) poor districts ruled by the Capitol. Each year, a boy and girl aged from twelve to eighteen from each district are selected to compete in a televised event called The Hunger Games. They battle to the death in order to become the last one standing. The Hunger Games is a thrilling and moving experience that catches the eye.

This movie is narrated and followed by Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl from District 12 who is competing in the 74th annual Hunger Games. Her sister, Primrose, is one of the children picked in the annual lottery along with Peeta Malark. Katniss cannot bear the thought of her sister being killed, so she volunteers as tribute for her, possibly not realizing what she has gotten herself into at the time. Now, with the two tributes chosen, the journey is set to begin following Katniss and Peeta's many battles.

As the movie begins to proceed and shows the two being mentored by previous victor, Haymitch Abernathy, the theme of love is later carried in when Peeta confesses his love for Katniss who is shocked. She is hostile at first based off of the fact she has feelings for Gale, her friend back in District 12, but is advised to fake feelings for him by Haymitch. This fake relationship sparked many feelings from the viewers of the games. The love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale helps the plot remain interesting despite the also breathtaking hasty battles between the tributes.

Alongside this love triangle, Katniss soon finds herself in the arena fighting to the death. She is now forced to fight for her life with her partner Peeta. Although not relatable, Katniss' battles always manage to draw in the viewer as she shows an alternate perspective. Throughout all of Katniss and Peeta's hardships during this battle, they have reached the end and are now the last two standing, but there can only be one. At this point, they are to decide who dies but neither are willing to kill one another. Katniss has then thought of the idea of double suicide. Both of them would eat poisonous berries, therefore eliminating the killing of one of them. This well thought out idea has forced the authorities to save both lives, declaring they have both one this battle. This nailbiting scene and journey to the end engages all viewers and leaves you wanting more.

This movie flows at a quick pace but manages to keep the viewer interested at all times. There is never a dull moment in this storyline despite the idea of it. The Hunger Games should be given 5/5 stars due to its captivating plot and beautifully portrayed story. This movie is recommended for viewers 11 and up due to some mature themes and violent scenes. The Hunger Games while fast pace at times is a compelling movie that all should see.
