Review of The Hunger (1983) by Alice J — 10 Mar 2010
As many other have commented it can definitely be described as "all style and no substance" .. it does seem to lose itself in indulgent lengthly stylised "cool" 80s gothic sequences in which the narrative gets a little lost at times. It would benefit from a little more explaination about the situation with Miriam and John.. you never understand the difference between Miriam and her lovers (I ended up on Wikipedia!). The music is good though.
However the idea behind it and the plot (what you can grasp) is very interesting indeed. Miriams predicament - living forever and only being able to take a companion for a few hundred years before they rapidly age and die - is intruiging and moving. Is she such a monster? What would we do?
It is a vampire film - but that word is never used.
While the film itself didn't impress me, it has made me search it's background and I am desperately searching for a copy of Whitly Streibers novel - which by all acount sounds very interesting indeed and with much more depth.
