Review of The Hunger (1983) by Peter H — 05 Feb 2011
THE HUNGER [1983]: One bizarrely stylish but rather so-so Vampire movie which has become a cult movie with modern audiences and with the Gothic Sub-culture. The Hunger is one weird mix of stunning cinema-photography with constantly cutting to flash backs and other random scenes.
The Plot: Husband and Wife John ( David Bowie) and Miriam (Catherine Deneuve) Blaylock are a typical upper class Manhattan couple with one major diffidence both need human blood to survive. Since John is a mere mortal, after a few 100 years with Miriam he starts to age quite rapidly. He seeks the help of Dr. Sarah Roberts (Susan Sarandon) who is researching human aging, when John ages quite rapidly in front of her, Sarah searches for him only to discover his wife Miriam who needs to replace her dying lover. She now becomes infatuated with Sarah and turns her into a vampire, but will Sarah be happy she has become a vampire?
I think this movie opening is quite unique for the fact it cuts quite rapidly form group Bauhaus performing their classic song BELA LUGOSI'S DEAD (which is quite appropriate for a vampire film) with cuts to John and Miriam on their nightly hunt with cuts to a monkey going insane. The rest of the film is decent (like the acting, direction, SFX, and scripting) but it's very average over all. 6/10.
