Review of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) by Private U — 18 Nov 2007
This film is amazing. Maureen O'Hara, in her first big movie role, is positively glowing as the gypsy Esmeralda. Charles Laughton is, IMO, the best Quasimodo there ever was. Some people might not like that they gave the story a happy ending, but they made it fit very well.
The last line of Quasimodo's makes me cry every time. Truly a remarkable film.
