Review of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) by Anne F — 21 Apr 2008
Such a sad story with a similar view to Cyrano de Bergerac - beauty is what matters. In the words of the song "Love is only for the lucky and the strong".
Charles Laughton was great as Quasimodo, his misshapen face and body were very effective. The saddest moment was at the end of the film where he asked a gargoyle, "Why was I not made of stone like thee?" and it didn't seem a ridiculous thing to ask.
