I have not read the Phillip Roth's novel, so my comments pertain solely to my reactions to the movie. I really was looking forward to some great acting by Hopkins and Kidman.
None of the actors was disappointing and I think the problem wasn't with them; the story itself failed to convince me. so i'll give 1 star from 5 to this film.
