Review of The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009) by Matt K — 28 Oct 2011
Now before you start calling names as to why I have something positive to say to this 'snuff', let me explain why I watched it to begin with: I wanted to know what happened next to the victims and how they survive through it all. And I could say it's fulfilled my expectations one way or another.
In my opinion, this movie has similar ties with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre; it was an event that could possibly happen in real life, and it gained a lot of controversy on its release for its shocking content, yet later proving influential to the horror genre. Dr. Heiter is one of the scariest, and slightly funny, horror villains of recent years and could join the ranks of Freddy and Jigsaw. And sure, the girls may be uninteresting and annoying to begin with, but weren't the group of friends in TCSM as well?
Many Hollywood horror movies nowadays are becoming cliche with the old 'jump' tactic, but Human Centipede relies on atmosphere and creepiness. Tom Six explained the scene when the centipede is first revealed; usually it would be lit dark and gritty, but instead he chose to make it sunlit in reflection to the mad Dr. Heiter's achievements. With that, it works effectively since you're already in suspenseful anticipation following the previous scenes; unknowing about how horrifying his experiment really is.
Now while I praise this movie, I can't say it'll appeal to everyone due to its concept. If you watch it, you get what you get.
