Review of The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009) by Ryan N — 27 Jun 2012
The Human Centipede is full of "why's" and precariously short on answers. Why does Heiter want to create a single being? Why do the two girls who fall into his trap exhibit all the intelligence of a box of rocks? Why does the person in "first position" go on his monologue near the end of the picture? Why does Heiter get such a boner over torturing people? Why does he allow them the decency of keeping their genitals covered if he gets off on being sadistic? See, if The Human Centipede actually answered any of these questions, the mythology around the picture would be lost.
Instead, by not answering and being as grotesque as it can, THC falls below most other horror/thrillers films. The big bad has no articulated reason for being the big bad, aside from the generic "because.
" The plot is flimsy (where do you go after the humans are connected?), the actual story stretched beyond its breaking point and the acting-aside from Laser-non-existent. Cliched and entirely too concerned with grossing out the audience, give me Saw any day.
At least Jigsaw knew why he did what he did.
