Review of The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) by Brandon Y — 16 Mar 2008
Of all the Coens' earliest movies, this is the one that really is a toss-up. The movie was visually impressive, and there was some great dialog in the script. However, I really didn't see the message of the whole movie, and Jennifer Jason Leigh's show-stealing performance was fun and unpredictable at first, but if you watch it again it becomes borderline annoying.
Overall, a good, but not great experience, it really marked an end of an era where the Coens would succeed on their own terms. Great movies would follow, like "Fargo," "The Big Lebowski" and "O Brother Where Art Thou?" but those would mark the period where the Coens went more mainstream in their work.
