Review of The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) by Aren B — 27 Oct 2008
"The Hudsucker Proxy" is the Coen Brothers' strange, gratuitous romp set in the 1950's. The dialog is rapid fire, with Jennifer Jason Leigh firing on all cylinders, much like the screwball comedies of the 1930's.
The shots are long, deliberate and wide, trying to establish an enormity to the entire film. The acting is strange, almost nonexistent, handled as if satirizing other films with similar dialog. Altogether, I don't really know what to make of this film, except that it is an enjoyable, cartoonish success story from the 50's, with admirable performances from Tim Robbins and Paul Newman, and a hilarious yet unfortunately small cameo by Bruce Campbell.
