Review of The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) by Dan G — 26 Mar 2009
One of those criminally overlooked films that somehow fell through the cracks, The Hudsucker Proxy is is really one of the Coen Brothers' best films (and that says a lot considering pretty much all of their movies except Intolerable Cruelty and Ladykillers are real gems).
The cast is great, Paul Newman gets to turn out an extreme against type role and have some fun, the period accuracy is astounding and the movie is flat out hilarious (and bizarre). There is a lot to love in this movie but I"ll admit that it does take a little effort on the audience's part as there is a heck of a lot to take in and the story keeps taking u-turns, but it all comes together quite nicely in the end.
This film needs a special edition reissue to gain it more notice, as, as it stands, its lackluster existing DVD has done nothing but help in keeping this gem a buried treasure. Break out your shovels.
