Review of The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) by Jed C — 20 Jan 2010
Confirming the notion that everyone has off days, this film (in stark contrast to the previously mentioned "No Country For Old Men") is a minor effort by the usually reliable Coens. Minor, but that doesn't make it bad - the Story of the Hula Hoop was a small comedic gem, and there were several sets, performances, ideas and moments I liked very much sprinkled throughout.
Counterbalancing the sprinkles was an extremely awkward Jennifer Jason Lee performance (via a SNL impersonation of Judy Garland) and a general lack of anything in particular in the film to care about.
If you have Paul Newman at hand, and he somehow makes little impression, something is amiss.
