Review of The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) by Donald L — 21 Apr 2010
Relentlessly goofy and over the top, this is a comedy about style more than substance but since that style is the Coen's it really works. I don't know why it took me so long to see this film, its directed by one of my favorite directing teams, co-written by Sam Raimi, and stars Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, with a great spot for Bruce Campbell as well.
The entire movie is one gag after another, but with the over the top performances it surprisingly holds up and never weighs down. Some of the comedy was really subtle as well, and I appreciate them not edging it down for me.
My only complaint is a few scenes seem out of place, most notably a dream dance sequence which doesn't flow as well as the one the Coen's will use much later in Lebowski. However, Robbins' awful dancing during the scene makes it hard to hate so its really a very minimal complaint.
