Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Sandy R — 10 May 2010
Boring! This film captures the era very well and is a throwback to the horror films of the 80's. The major problem is the thinnest of plots, it's likely there was little in the way of script and the director had to stretch it out.
The House of the Devil suffers from far too much exposition. At times it's as if the director has no concept of how to edit his own movie. The main actress reminded me of Jessica Harper from Suspiria and was one of the reasons I kept watching.
I was waiting for the pay off, when it finally came it was so ludicrous I wish I'd never bothered. The whole first hour of the film is pretty much the main character walking around the house and entering various rooms.
The music changes cue but nothing happens. The House of the Devil is a complete snorefest!
