Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Karl M — 28 Jun 2010
An interesting throwback to '70s and '80's horror flicks, that's set in the '80's, complete with big cassette Walkman and all. A broke college student takes a babysitting gig in a weird house with a weird couple, and eventually discovers that she's to be part of a Satanic ritual.
The movie moves at a deliberately slow pace, and while it doesn't reach the "Would someone just please get killed already?" frustration of Death Proof, there's a little bit of patience required. Fortunately, you're given enough tantalizing/creepy moments here and there to keep you interested. It's not an over-the-top slasher flick by any means, but is good and creepy. The score lends to the overall atmosphere, though it overpowers the film at certain moments. If you're looking for high-speed, high-gore, you won't find it here. It is, however, a film worth watching.
