Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Pedro P — 10 Aug 2012

Lets say youve never heard of The House of the Devil and I told you to watch it and told you it was made in 1980 ... you watch it and believe it was made in 1980 and then I drop the bomb and say it was made in 2009 and well, you drop your jaw.

Cuz thats how retro this homage is, everything from the movie posters(which by the way are SUPERB)to limited edition V/H/S's released for this movie are as retro as can be and if you think thats the only retro for this movie wait till you actually watch it! This what appears to be another paying your debts to horror heroes kind of deal ends up making itself its own horror hero in a time where horror movies need that hero.

A young and extremely cute college student Samantha(Jocelin Donahue, who shockingly gives one of the most real scream queen performances to mark in the books) needs to make quick cash over the weekend to be able to rent an apartment that she needs desperately.

So what does she do? Well the smart thing obviously! Takes a babysitting job in a creepy house which is owned by a creepy couple in the middle of nowhere... oh wait technically its not nowhere since theres a graveyard close by, so I guess that nowhere should respectivly be called Fucked.

Now I dare not reveal more cuz then there goes the suprise out the window. One thing all horror buffs should respect of this film is that it goes where no other American director dares to go to anymore for horror.

..Suspense! Yes not pop-ups not titty blood not CGI images but rather the good ol' classic what makes horror movies good...Suspense! This movie is so good that its too good for itself, you know the whole two birds one stone? Yeah? Now imagine that but ends up being twenty birds and one pebble.
