Review of The House of Mirth (2000) by Angie M — 08 Jan 2008
Beautiful costumes, some good performances and the unspoken commentary on class structure in early 20th Century America are the pros of the movie. Unfortunately, even that cannot rescue the movie from its lack of compelling drama or sensible plot development.
Till the end I never understood why Lily and Laurence never married, even when she was desperate and he was clearly in love with her. The pace can get agonizingly slow, especially when the plot itself doesn't appear interesting enough to hold attention.
Gillian Anderson was a little uneven at the beginning, but did get better as the movie progressed.
