Review of The House of Mirth (2000) by Lina P — 12 Nov 2007
I don't know what it is. Maybe it is the coming winter. The fact that we have changed the hour.
I hate my job. I make a lot of money, but I hate my job. I know I have no right to say it, that it's wrong. A lot of people doesn't have a job. Also, I know that it's just a matter of time before I find another job. An interesting job that I'm not overqualified to do.
I respect Lily Bart because she is strong. She is stubborn. She does not let anyone step on her. And she is human, because she fails. But what is her biggest flaw? Her pride? Her reluctance to accept help from her friends. Certainly not her love of money. Saying that would be a contradiction. She wastes her money, but then she refuses to marry to get them back. She comprimises herself, and then chooses to die and leave the money she owe on the side of the bed.
It would be idiotic to say that I admire the fact that she commits suiscide. That's not it of course. But I admire her staleness. She will not submit to pressure under any surcumstances.
Is it shame that kills her? Or is she tired? Is it the lack of love? I don't know. It just feels like her life was such a waste.
Beautifully filmed. Beautifully played. Wonderful casting.
Eric Stoltz + Gillian Anderson = erotic suspension.
She is extraordinary. I have never seen her more beautiful. And the reddish colour of her hair. And how she plays this woman, with such sensibility.
And Eric Stoltz. Frankly. I'd love to sleep with him if I had the chance (which I won't, therefore I can say it). Hmmmm.
I need to sleep now. Did not get sleep any sleep last night. And this horrific translation I did this weekend has worn me out.
Oh, if I could only spend the hours between 8am and 4pm doing something more interesting. I need to use this period, I need to look at these people I'm working with. Because I don't get them. Business lawyers. A sect, a rase of their own. I will observ, learn, and then be gone......
