Review of The House (2017) by Joe T — 02 Jul 2017
The overwhelmingly negative consensus for The House is flat wrong. Actually, the movie perfectly avoided becoming a corny, sentimental comedy (shocking considering the family premise). Poehler, Ferrell, and Mantzoukas delivered their jokes well and often, making the movie entertaining and fast paced. The supporting cast was likewise studded with gems, making for very few stale scenes.
With a goofy, unrealistic resolution, it's clear the movie wasn't supposed to be watched critically. It didn't want to take itself seriously, which provided consistent laughs without having to swallow a corny family lesson. It wasn't excedeling well written, but the cast brought the movie to life. It's not an all star comedy, but it's good-much better than the Melissa McCarthy style comedies that have thrived lately.
